2-3 November 2019, Akhalkalki – The importance and impact of literacy and fiction on the human development process was the main focus of the lessons and field meetings between the Head of the National Library of Georgia, Giorgi Kekelidze, and Akhalkalaki youth and school pupils. The events was organized with a main focus on youth and women integration within the framework of the EU-supported project “Promoting a New Rural Development Approach in Akhalkalaki.”
A formal lesson was held at the Akhalkalaki Local Action Group (LAG) training center and attended by the Akhalkalaki LAG, youth and women representatives. Mr. Kekelidze explained the concept of the Equilibrium Movement - reading spaces for all villages - was described along with a visual explanation of the importance of the literacy.
"Opening libraries and holding meetings, lectures and seminars will help to develop the youth. Books will help you overcome fears of the future and seek new adventures. We must do everything for the intellectual development of the new generation which is the purpose of Equilibrium. This is not a one-day meeting with locals. Equilibrium will continue to visit Akhalkalaki schools and we are very much looking forward to becoming a friend of yours,” said Giorgi Kekelidze.
Within the framework of the initiative, representatives of the National Library of Georgia and invited guests will visit Akhalkalaki municipality villages and distribute Georgian and English books. Free-of-charge Sunday Schools in art and culture will also be organized for locals.
“It is our honor to host Mr. Kekelidze in Akhalkalaki. Together with the local government, the LAG will support all visitors to the Akhalkalaki municipality as we try to overcome the social and integration challenges of our local population and make our youth more active,” said Apetnak Zandaryan, Chairman of the LAG.
The Project “Promoting a New Rural Development Approach in Akhalkalaki” is implemented by the DRDVE of GIPA. Project partners are Mercy Corps, ELVA and West Cork Development Partnership. Project is financed in the framework of European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD).
