Winners of the Joshua Friedman and GIPA prize for the best work in journalism

The Joshua Friedman and GIPA prizes for the best work in Journalism were awarded on the European Journalism Training Association conference held on 16 June. The chairperson of the committee, Maka Antidze, announced the winning journalistic pieces while Joshua Friedman awarded the prizes to the authors.

The contest received a total of 21 applications and the jury reviewed over 40 pieces of work. The jury was composed of: Maka Antidze, Maia Mikashavidze, Natalia Antelava, Sopiko Megrelidze, Zviad Koridze and Akaki Gogichaishvili.

The jury selected six best submissions:

  1. GIPA-Friedman prize money, award and certificate were granted to the piece – Offshore Company Spent 3 Years Chasing Ivanishvili’s Passport – the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), authors: Nino Bakradze, David Bloss. The article was published on Netgazeti on 03.04.2016.

  2. The prize money and the certificate for the best investigative work on TV was awarded to the piece – Police Agent or a Victim. The video is produced by the Studio Monitor and was broadcast through Maestro TV. Authors: Ketevan Gigashvili, Nana Biganishvili.

GIPA-Friedman certificates were awarded to the following works:

  1. Do not Mess with a Policeman, or Vendetta, produced by the Investigative Journalism Group of the news section at the Georgian Public Broadcaster – Investigative Reporter. Authors: Lia Toklikishvili, Maia Gogoladze.

  2. Inaccessible Long-term Treatment – Bureaucracy due to the Life in the Occupied Tskhinvali, 18 February, Liberali. Author: Natia Amiranashvili

  3. The Black Sea and the Rivers, Studio Monitor, Maestro, 24 May, 2015. Author: Salome Tsetskhladze.

  4. Tbilisi’s homeless lodgers, Studio Monitor, TV Company Caucasus, 20 February. Author: Tamar Gelashvili.

GIPA-Friedman Prize for the best work in journalism was established in 2012. The prize money constitutes 1500 Euros.
