16-day campaign against gender-based violence has been marked in Akhalkalaki

On December 7, 2019 with the joint effort of Akhalkalaki Local Action Group, Department of Rural Development and Vocational Education of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA), UNFPA Georgia Country Office, National Parliamentary Library of Georgia 16-day global campaign against gender-based violence has been marked in Akhalkalaki.

As part of the UNFPA projects, an Equality Corner have been opened at Ilia Chavchavadze public school #3 in Akhalkalaki, which enables local youth to raise their awareness about equality through the literacy and fiction. In addition to the equality corner, an exhibition of a photographer Dina Oganova has been gifted to the shcool showcasing two photo projects: “Girls from the Future” and “Peers for Equality”. Through pictures and quotes Dina Oganova's photo project “Girls from the Future” shares the stories of the adolescent girls (Age 10-16) from different parts of Georgia. The Equality Corner was opened by Giorgi Kekelidze, a writer and a director of the National Library of Georgia. Within the framework of the event, he delivered a public lecture and talked about the idea of gender equality and its importance.

“It is very symbolic to open the Equality Corner at Ilia Chavchavadze public school in Akhalkalaki. We want to share the heritage of Ilia which aimed the developed Georgia through the educated society.” – Giorgi Kekelidze.

Within the framework of the event, Nana Kashakashvili, head of the Department of Rural Development and Vocational Education of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs awarded certificates to the Akhalkalaki Local Action Group Training Center’s graduates of the Georgian language and special painting course.

December 8, 2019 was dedicated to the Equilibrium project. Small libraries have been opened in the village schools of Akhalkalaki municipality: Chamdura, Kirovakani, Vachiani. Within the framework of the above mentioned event, Giorgi Kekelidze delivered a public lecture to the students and teachers of schools and talked about the idea of gender equality and its importance. The action is supported by the project Promoting a New Rural Development Approach in Akhalkalaki.

The Project “Promoting a New Rural Development Approach in Akhalkalaki” is implemented by the DRDVE of GIPA. Project partners are Mercy Corps, ELVA and West Cork Development Partnership. Project is financed in the framework of European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD).
